Event Description

Enjoy a circular walk of Portobello

Porty has many historical connections with Africa and the Caribbean. Who knew that in the early 19th century an elite Jamaican family lived where Greggs now stands?

The family of a Grenada-born poet just along Bath Street? Why were performers from Somalia living on the sea front over 100 years ago? Come out to hear intriguing tales of Edinburgh's seaside.

Age 13+ under-18s should be accompanied by an adult.

Organiser Bio

Black History Walking Tours Edinburgh was founded by Lisa Williams in 2018. Lisa is of  Caribbean British heritage, lived in Grenada for 20 years and moved to Edinburgh in 2011. 

A Research Fellow at Edinburgh University, her unique approach comes from childhood stays in the islands, studying Caribbean history and society for her degree in the 1990s, and teaching primary school in Grenada.
