Porty Pride Volunteer Code of Conduct
Porty Pride Volunteer Code of Conduct
Purpose:
It is important to set out the standards of behaviour Porty Pride expects from all volunteers. A Code of Conduct does this in an open and transparent way.
Mission statement:
Porty Pride is an intergenerational, intersectional, accessible community-run pride. We see community as a positive tool of activism and community-building as a powerful solution to social injustices. Our community includes LGBTQ+ communities and their allies because it needs all of us to bring about the world we want to live in.
Aim:
The aims of Porty Pride are to:
Organise a safe and inclusive annual community pride run by and for LGBTQ+ people of Portobello, their friends and allies.
Work to change homophobic, biphobic and transphobic attitudes in Portobello
Support and champion the rights and needs of the LGBTQ+ community locally and LGBTQ+ communities across Scotland.
To achieve these aims we endeavour to create safe spaces and therefore require volunteers to actively work in line with our values and agree to the behaviours outlined in this document.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Principles:
All those involved in Porty Pride are trans inclusive and trans allies. All those involved in Porty Pride will at all times work towards the elimination of all forms of discrimination including but not limited to gender, gender identity, race, sexuality, disability, faith, or age.
Porty Pride operates in a collegiate manner and celebrates each person’s value and contribution.
The Organising Committee of Porty Pride is committed to doing the work of decolonisation, de-centering whiteness and anti-racism work. We acknowledge that some groups are under-represented on the Organising Committee and strive to address this.
Porty Pride is committed to the social model of disability and any barriers lie with our programme development and not people. We are committed to eradicating and erasing those barriers.
Porty Pride is committed to an Environmental Societal Governance and taking positive actions that contribute to mitigating climate change and protecting the planet. Porty Pride was Scotland’s first pride to sign up to be a Fossil Free Pride.
Volunteer behaviour and communication:
When volunteering at Porty Pride, or communicating via Porty Pride channels, the following general standards are expected in both face-to-face and online communication:
Volunteers behave in a respectful and polite manner
Volunteers seek to cooperate with members of the Organising Committee and one another, to achieve the aims of Porty Pride
Volunteers follow guidance set out by the Organising Committee, especially that which is intended to ensure people’s safety
Volunteers familiarise themselves with, and seek to uphold, the Safer Spaces Policy
Safeguarding: Volunteers should familiarise themselves with the safeguarding policy on the website.
Complaints: If a complaint is made by a Porty Pride attendee, or another volunteer, volunteers must not try to resolve these themselves. Instead, volunteers should refer the complaint to a member of the Organising Committee, or refer them to the Complaints Procedure on the website.
Attendance: Volunteers are expected to be present and ready to help at the start time of any shifts they’ve signed up for. Volunteers should let the Volunteer Coordinator or another member of the Organising Committee know if they are unable to attend or are likely to be late or need to leave early for a shift.
Alcohol and drugs: Use of drugs and alcohol while volunteering is not permitted and volunteers must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs while on a volunteering shift. If a volunteer is suspected of use while on a volunteering shift, they are likely to be asked to leave.
Environment: Volunteers should make every effort to reduce wastage, recycle, turn off excessive lights or heating/cooling equipment, use water resources appropriately and switch off any electronic equipment which is not in use.
Handling money: We trust volunteers to act with integrity and care when handling money.
Breaches: Porty Pride seeks to overcome differences of opinion and misunderstandings in as generous and inclusive a way as possible.
Breaches of this code of conduct will lead to a conversation with (at least two) members of the Organising Committee in which – if the issue cannot be resolved – a volunteer may be asked to leave.
However, if a volunteer is deemed to have engaged in serious misconduct, they will be asked to leave immediately and may face other consequences (such as legal action).
Any misconduct believed to be criminal in nature will be reported to the appropriate authorities and the Organising Committee will cooperate with those authorities to any extent required of them.
Serious misconduct includes:
intentional sexual harassment, harassment, bullying
violent, dangerous or intimidatory conduct
serious breach of procedures and guidance especially those designed to ensure people’s safety
theft or unauthorised possession of any property or facilities belonging to Porty Pride, its volunteers or its partners
consumption of alcohol or drugs, or intoxication by reason of alcohol or drugs, which could impact negatively on others
inappropriate use of email, social media or other communications channels
Contact:
If you would like to speak to someone about any concerns about breaches of this Code of Conduct, please contact the Organising Committee member on duty during your shift, or the Volunteer Coordinator.
